Getting started in voice-over
The skills and kit you need to begin, and how to record a sample that gets noticed.
Demand for Arabic voices keeps growing across ads, apps, audiobooks and explainer videos. The best thing about this field is that it depends on your voice and delivery above all else.
Core skills
- Correct pronunciation and clear articulation.
- The ability to switch between Modern Standard Arabic and local dialects.
- Control over pace, tone and pauses.
- Reading a script naturally, as if you were simply talking.
Starter kit
You do not need a professional studio to start. A good microphone, closed-back headphones and a quiet room with curtains or rugs to cut the echo are enough to record decent samples.
Record your sample
- Pick three short scripts: an ad, a narration and a set of instructions.
- Record each one in a different tone.
- Keep the whole sample under ninety seconds.
Drink lukewarm water before recording, and avoid ice-cold drinks and dairy, which can affect how clear your voice sounds.
