Understanding rates and negotiating fairly
What determines what a job is worth, and how to ask for a fair fee without losing the opportunity.
There is no single rate for every kind of job. The value changes with the type of campaign, its length and how the images will be used. Understanding these factors helps you negotiate with confidence.
What makes a job worth more?
- Usage period: a full year is worth more than a single month.
- Usage scope: billboards and TV are worth more than one social post.
- Exclusivity: being barred from working with competitors deserves compensation.
- Working hours, travel and any special preparation.
How to negotiate
- Ask about usage before naming any figure.
- State your fee clearly with a brief explanation of what it covers.
- Be flexible on the details, not on your core value.
- Record whatever you agree in the booking on the platform.
If the fee offered is below what you expected, ask: ‘Could we shorten the usage period for this amount?’ It is a polite way to reach a middle ground.
And remember that turning down an unfair offer is not a loss. Accepting very low fees hurts you and your peers in the industry.
